Fashion Deals and Steals (and food too)!

So I promised I would add a little fashion in tonight’s blog. I have been thinking long and hard about what exactly to write about. Sometimes it’s just downright depressing to think about clothes, shoes, hats, bags, scarves, boots OH MY! when I certainly shouldn’t put my money towards these beautiful things. Although I lust over things I just simply cannot afford…helloooo Louboutins and Tory Burch handbag…..

So I have to make due with what I’ve got. And that is my frugalista shopping ways. Typically when I bargain hunt for items I look at Forever 21. Beware. You can get one horrendous outfit here. You must go in, hold your head high and take that store by storm. You must be ready and willing to dig through the sometimes always messy and disorganized racks and shelves to find true gems.

For instance, I bought this deep purple sheer (with a built in slip) shirt dress about one year ago.

It was wedged in between things of similar colors, but I would not have found it unless I worked for it! I believe this cost something like $15? I have worn it numerous times, and once to a casual outdoor summer wedding, and I nearly ALWAYS receive compliments on it. It is not necessary to spend a fortune to look like a million bucks.

I pride myself on finding things for a steal that may look like I paid more. Forever 21 and H&M are great examples of this, BUT I also raid sale racks like it’s nobody’s business.

Let’s start with J Crew. Now, I mentioned yesterday that students receive a discount (and I believe it is only on full-priced merchandise), but I notice that when they receive new shipments of clothes honestly wait a week or so and there is a 75% chance it’s on the sale rack. For instance I went into the store about 2 weeks ago and fell in love with this embellished tee.It was $49.50 that first week I saw it.

I went back the following weekend and I noticed this tee was in the sale rack for $29.99. Not even a week later it was on sale. So my advice is to patiently wait to see if it goes on sale at J Crew because they have a tendency to do this to their inventory.

Also, occasionally with J Crew’s sales there is a promotion where you can take an additional 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% off already ticketed sale merchandise. For instance, I bought this shirt a few months ago on a shopping trip with Ange.

It was originally about $60-$70. It was on sale for about $20 plus a discount, plus a student discount (like I said, I’m not sure if they allow student discounts on already discounted merchandise anymore), and ended up paying a whopping $9 for a fabulous cream button down shirt. Yes, you read that correctly. A $9 button down shirt from J Crew. I love.

Some other places with great/fast sales are Banana Republic and Ann Taylor, just to name a few.

Another great way to take advantages of discounts and promotions is to be in tune with the company or store’s social networking sites. I follow quite a few style companies/magazines on Twitter, such as InStyle, StyleBakery, Glamour and People Style Watch. They constantly have giveaways for the first 50 to ReTweet, coupon code offers, and have info about upcoming sales that I probably would not know about if I did not follow them on Twitter. For instance the other day, StyleBakery tweeted “Bloomingdales – 20% off with friends & family! code BFRIEND through 11/15.” What a deal?!

Lastly, another one of my favorite things about shopping is the convenience of online shopping. I rarely do it as I do not want to put myself any further into money troubles, BUT when I do, I make sure it’s totally worth it and as cheap as possible. My current FAVORITE place to shop online (or browse as I have only bought one thing from them) is Piperlime. Piperlime is a company owned by GAP and is currently only offered as an online retailer. They started with shoes, but now they have handbags, jewelery and clothes! Most of the things on Piperlime are more on the expensive side (at least for my dwindling budget), but they carry a wide array of designers from Joe’s Jeans (currently LOVING these jeans BTW…Christmas gift if anyone (mother) is reading!)

Joe’s Jeans ‘Chelsea’ Skinny Ponte Knit Ankle Pants

Steve Madden, BCBG Maxazria, Splendid, Theory, Trina Turk, Nine West, Free People….the list goes on my friends! Please check out their website. Oh and did I mention the BEST part of this website?

That’s what originally sold me on Piperlime. I figure, why buy something online if I have to pay for shipping? Especially when it is things like shoes, where shipping can cost an arm and a leg. So, in honor of my last trip to Hawaii (this past summer), I splurged and bought these pair of sandals from Piperlime.
I say “splurge.” They were actually on sale for $25. They are amazingly comfortable and the brand of the shoes is Unisa. I am SO glad I went out of my comfort zone to buy some shoes online!

Alright, that was actually quite fun! I honestly didn’t know where I was headed when I started that, but it all just kind of came out! I hope you all liked it :).

Now, to finish off with today’s eats. For lunch I had the leftover pasta from last night.

It was even better this time around. I debated for about 5 minutes whether or not to eat it cold and after a few bites I decided I wanted to be warmed up! Good choice Sarah! While I ate this scrumptious meal I began to watch an episode of Glee on hulu.

I saw the pilot ages ago when it was released on iTunes and since then I’ve only seen bits and pieces. During lunch I watched most of episode 5 where Kristin Chenoweth makes her début! I LOVE her. Oh and she plays a fabulous little alcoholic-singer-trainwreck-sweetheart. Love it.

That pasta kept me full throughout the afternoon so I passed on a snack and drank some Starbucks chamomile Calm tea instead.

The gym came and went. I battled with myself for a bit because running is becoming a numbers game lately. I do not like it. I feel the need to run further, faster and harder each time I run. Ok not only is this unrealistic, but it is also just stupid of me to try and attain this every single time. Since I’ve been wanting to concentrate on strength training, I fought the urge to pound out 5+ miles and did 4.25 miles and spent a good 15 minutes on arms and core work.

On the train ride home I had an unpictured baby apple because I was going to chew my arm off. Ew.

Came home to find my poor boyfriend stressed with school and trying to fight off a tummy ache. He is so stubborn and won’t let me do anything to help him feel better. So in the meantime I made myself a little din din. I was really craving some of that ice cream from last night and wanted to incorporate that into my dinner (yes, ice cream is a PERFECT candidate for dinner).

  • 1/2 cup of arctic freeze chocolate ice cream
  • 1/2 scoop chocolate protein powder
  • 1 tbsp. almond butter
  • handfuls of spinach
  • unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • ice cubes

Drinking out of a wine glass makes this extra classy. So does the bendy straw.

This did not hold me over one bit. So I made myself a little yogurt mess of greek yog, peanut butter puffins, shredded oats, kashi go lean and trail mix. Nom nom nom.

Okay, I’m officially pooped and off to read in bed!

What a fabulous entry! You have the wisdom of Glamour, Lucky, InStyle and all other fashion magazines combined. Your smart bargain tips are to die for — I totally agree, you should only buy stuff that looks more expensive than it costs! 😉

It’s funny, that purple dress looks so plain on the hanger, yet so gorgeous when you wear it. You really have an eye for stuff that looks good. I would love to see more of your favorite pieces!
